Why HUTS Exists: The process of getting a home today—especially in the country—is broken. Inventory is scarce, prices are distorted, and the traditional paths to ownership are littered with obstacles. Existing homes are often overpriced and overbid, sometimes by institutional investors with trillion-dollar war chests, leaving everyday buyers on the sidelines. New construction? Often oversized, underbuilt, and designed to maximize developer profit—not your long-term comfort, efficiency, or equity. Renovations? A risky gamble of hidden problems, cost overruns, and unpredictable timelines.
Hiring a traditional architect can deliver beauty and craft, but the incentives are misaligned. In most cases, the more you spend, the more they earn—hardly a recipe for affordability. On the other end of the spectrum, tract-home developers churn out homes with the square footage (and energy bills) of small hotels, but without the durability, charm, or efficiency a rural lifestyle demands.
