Big L3 Bed2 Bath1,500-2,000 SqftHybrid Home

Overview

When our client decided to relocate from the West Coast to the Catskills, they wanted more than a change of scenery. They wanted a place that connected their daily life and creative work to the landscape around them.
HUTS helped source the land, guiding the search toward a parcel that balanced privacy, access, and orientation. The result was a 6-acre site framed by hardwood forest and open meadow, perfectly suited for a home that invites light, air, and art.
From there, we adapted our Big L Standard, shaping it around the slope, solar path, and the client’s creative practice. The home is modern in form, warm in tone, and deeply tied to its setting.

Site Plan

At Home in the Trees

The home sits along a gentle rise, positioned for full southern exposure and long views across the trees. A simple drive loop connects the home, studio, and potential future outbuilding sites without cutting into the forest edge.

Indoor Outdoor Living

The gabled main volume anchors the home, while a studio wing extends off its axis to form an L-shaped footprint that defines a protected outdoor terrace.

Picture Perfect

Natural cedar cladding and dark window frames give the structure a calm, grounded presence.

Calm Spaces

Throughout, the materials remain true to the HUTS ethos: warm wood, clean detailing, and restrained composition that let the landscape lead.

Framing the View

Each window and door is placed with intention, framing a view, capturing light, or creating a sense of pause.

A Place for Making

A custom art studio connects to the main home yet remains acoustically separate. It offers soft indirect light and generous wall space, designed as a creative anchor for the client’s new life on the East Coast.

Key Features

Features.jpg
01Engaging the Slope

The home is carefully sited along a gentle slope, allowing the land to guide both its form and its flow. The main living volume sits slightly elevated, giving long views over the meadow, while the art studio steps down with the grade to create a grounded, sheltered space. This subtle split in elevation helps the house feel balanced between lookout and landing.

02A Natural Palette

The exterior palette is simple and enduring. Natural wood siding and a copper-toned metal roof create a soft, monochromatic look that feels calm against the surrounding landscape. Over time, both materials will weather gracefully, deepening in tone and texture. The result is a home that grows more connected to its site each season, settling into the landscape rather than standing apart from it.

03Future Features

The site plan includes space reserved for a future pool and terrace, positioned to extend the home’s southern exposure and take advantage of afternoon light. This area will connect seamlessly to the main deck, creating a natural flow between interior gathering spaces and outdoor living. Even in its current form, the layout anticipates that future addition, ensuring the landscape and utilities are already prepared for it.

Interiors

The interior palette is dark and rich, creating a sense of warmth and depth that contrasts the light-filled surroundings. Layered materials and deep tones define each space, with walnut and other darker wood species used throughout the millwork to bring texture and weight. The result is a calm, grounded atmosphere that feels both refined and comfortable—an interior that complements the natural quiet of its setting.
