Overview

Dalewood Road is a hybrid home in Southern Vermont that will serve as a personal ski getaway for the owners in the winter and a revenue-focused rental property the rest of the year. It’s set on a meadow-like lot that dips down to a natural creek.
Since the owners planned to use the home during what would normally be peak rental season in the area, we put a lot of time and energy into making sure the property would be desirable to renters year-round. The sloped lot made this a unique challenge, but our tiered design leading down to the creek provides ample outdoor gathering space in the warmer months.

01Tiered Site Plan

We worked with the land rather than against it to let the property sprawl out across the slope down to the creek. There are terrace-like spaces carved into the lot that provide room for outdoor games, dining, and relaxation to make the home appealing during the off-season months.

02Creative Positioning

The home is set back from the street and situated on the actual slope of the plot, which required some creative foundation work. This helps reduce road noise, but it also creates a rear-facing deck that feels elevated and overlooks the rolling meadows that fall away underneath it.

03Flexible Occupancy

Our Dogtrot standard fitted with a loft area, a basement, and split sleeping areas helps create a space that can accommodate the owners on a private weekend getaway for skiing just as comfortably and naturally as a larger group of guests in the summer. The result is a home that flexes with the demand and never feels undersized or too big.

Exterior View from Left

The second-story deck provides three unique opportunities for outdoor relaxation. Between the two gabled sections is an open dining area that’s protected from the wind but still offers generous views of the landscape. That expands into a more traditional deck that’s a bit less private, which also creates a covered area underneath that guests can use for fresh air even in inclement weather.

Second-Story Deck Photo

The deck off the rear of the second story ties the private bedrooms and the central living area together with the outdoors. The result is a three-wall outdoor room that feels just as connected to the terraced yard and the creek below as it does to the interior spaces surrounding it.

Interiors

We opted for light and unobtrusive interior design to help make the views the main focal point of the property. We used locally-sourced pine for the millwork, neutral furnishings, and gentle splashes of color to maintain an open, airy feel that meshes with the beautiful outdoor backdrop no matter where you are in the home.
