Overview

Located within The Sea Ranch in Sonoma County, Seaward Reach was conceived as a compact, efficient home that fits naturally into the redwood forest while opening to views of the Pacific Ocean.
The project began with a challenge: create a place that honors Sea Ranch’s design heritage and passes its famously rigorous review process, while also testing new ways to reduce the cost of building in a complex coastal environment.
Our team worked from the land outward, shaping the form and siting to lightly touch the slope, preserve trees, and frame long views across the property to the sea.

Site Plan

A Mini Compound

The home occupies a small clearing within dense redwoods, positioned for privacy and filtered light. The orientation balances forest immersion with ocean visibility, allowing the house to open westward while maintaining a sense of protection from the wind.

Simple Forms

Seaward Reach uses the Medium Bar Standard as its starting point, adapted for the steep coastal site and Sea Ranch’s design guidelines. The form is simple and geometric, wrapped in vertical cedar siding that will gray naturally.

Indoor Outdoor Rhythm

A series of large picture windows align with view corridors, creating a rhythm of framed moments rather than continuous glass. The result is a home that feels quietly modern yet deeply contextual—an evolution of the Sea Ranch ethos rather than a departure from it.

Up Among the Trees

The bedrooms sit at the edge of the site where the land begins to fall away, creating the feeling of being lifted into the trees. From inside, the ground drops out of view and the windows open to branches and sky. This subtle relationship to the slope gives each room a sense of calm elevation—private, quiet, and surrounded by the forest canopy.

Warm Woods

Throughout the interior, a thoughtful use of millwork and natural wood creates a unified and inviting palette. Each space is connected by tone and texture, with warm finishes that balance the cool light filtering through the redwoods. Built-ins, cabinetry, and trim are designed as part of the architecture rather than added onto it, giving the home a cohesive feel where craft and material quietly define the atmosphere.

Key Features

01Pre-Fab Panels

The home will be built using a panelized construction system, allowing much of the framing and envelope work to be completed off-site in a controlled environment. This approach will precision, reduced waste, and shorten the on-site build time.

02Bohemian Roots

The interior aesthetic nods to Sea Ranch’s bohemian origins, where simplicity, natural materials, and creative restraint defined the community’s early homes. Exposed wood, handmade textures, and a lived-in warmth replace ornament with honesty. The spaces feel both refined and relaxed—a modern interpretation of the free-spirited design culture that first shaped this stretch of the Sonoma coast.

03A Small Forest Compound

The property is organized as a small compound, with the house, deck, and shed all enclosed by a simple fence that defines the edge of the clearing. Each element is clad in the same vertical cedar siding, creating a sense of visual continuity and quiet order within the landscape. The consistent material palette ties the structures together, making the ensemble feel intentional and cohesive—like a single composition nestled within the redwoods.

Interiors

The interiors are light and airy, filled with natural daylight that filters through the surrounding trees. Soft tones and simple finishes keep the spaces open and calm, while the exposed wood structure and tactile materials preserve the cabin character that defines a true Sea Ranch home. The balance of brightness and warmth creates an atmosphere that feels both contemporary and deeply rooted in the coastal forest setting.
