The Dixon Restaurant

Micro Hospitality

Overview

The Dixon is a commercial space we’re designing and building in Roxbury, NY, located just across the street from the HUTS showroom. It’s also the first commercial construction project on Main Street in Roxbury in the last 100 years, so we’re working within the constraints of a few local organizations to ensure it suits the historic town.
One of the big challenges with this project was deciding how to size everything. The restaurant and bar needed to be small enough to feel like a quiet spot for locals to gather year-round, but it also needed to accommodate more people when the town’s seasonality causes occupancy to swell. We arrived at a restaurant that will meet the needs of residents and visitors alike.

In an effort to make the restaurant fit in with the surrounding residential properties, we brought the building forward to match the setback of nearby homes, and we tucked the parking away behind the restaurant.

Key Features

Features.jpg
01Contextual Design

We needed The Dixon to feel like it belonged in the area, not only to abide by regulations from historic preservation groups, but also so that it was a welcome addition for residents. We matched the setbacks of surrounding homes and created a design that looks like a modern renovation of an old barn, something that fits with the surrounding properties.

02Intentional Color Choice

Just above Main Street in Roxbury is Paint Mine Road, where red shale was mined and made into the red paint that you can still see on historic structures throughout the area. We chose that same color for our project as an homage to the history of the town and also to help the building blend in with the area.

03Adapted Design Standards

While our design standards are intended for residential properties, we adapted them for The Dixon to accommodate a commercial dining room, a bar, and an outdoor seating area. This afforded us the predictable pricing and familiar construction process they deliver even for a drastically different project.

Interiors

The interior of the restaurant is defined by a limited color palette, which helps create a relaxing atmosphere without needing to subscribe to a theme. The Baltic birch and amber glass accents help achieve that, while the bar at the rear features a bit more color and a tiled wall that adds a little intrigue.
