The U House

Second Home2 Bed2 Bath

Overview

This 3,000-square-foot take on our Village standard started with a tear-down of a second home in Southwest Michigan. The client had been using the property most notably to host big Fourth of July parties for family. We knocked down the structure, which had fallen into disarray, and built a new home to suit their needs whether they were there solo or with relatives.

We designed the property around the pool and the lake views, and it’s built to flex based on occupancy, so it feels just as comfortable for two people as it does for a dozen.

Key Features

01U-shape
Features (40).jpg

The home consists of three connected-but-separate structures that all lead out to the hardscaping around the pool. This lets the outdoor space function as the primary focus, which creates a natural communal area for family and friends.

02Indoor-outdoor flow
Features (43).jpg

The massive picture windows, the large glass doors, and the natural building materials inside and out create a flow between the indoor and outdoor areas, making them feel like one continuous space ideal for gathering.

03Scalability for Guests
Features (46).jpg

We designed everything to be scalable based on occupancy. The owners can “shut down” two of the three sections of the home when they’re the only ones on-site and then expand the area that’s heated or cooled when family comes to visit.

Interiors

We chose a light, neutral color palette with clean whites and natural oak millwork to keep the primary focus on the outdoor gathering space. The marble slab countertops, stone fireplace, and copper-look hardware and fixtures make the living areas feel modern and luxurious while still promoting relaxation.
