Strategy

Shot Point is a hospitality and wellness resort we’re designing to be built out in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. The focal point of the first project phase was designing responsibly around the land and strategically around the location and access concerns.
The primary challenge we faced was creating a place that would make financial sense for our client while producing an exciting experience for guests. We needed something guests would book for a week, not just a few days. Something that would be just as desirable in the summer as when the entire 240 acres are covered in four feet of snow. Something that would be the attraction itself rather than just a place to stay in the area.

Unit Design

We wanted to put as little strain on the land as possible, but we also needed roomy, usable spaces that guests would book for longer stays. We achieved that, in part, by clustering units together so that they can share wells and septic systems. This layout also improves the logistics of guest turnover for the maintenance staff.
Those clusters span out over different biomes. Some are seeded deep in the raw forest, some sit in and around natural wetlands, and some are situated in a beach setting on the shore of Lake Superior.

Forest Sitting

The forest units will be accessible by primary access roads, which are scarce on the property to limit interruption of the natural landscape. These units are more substantial and will be fitted with lofted sleeping areas, full kitchens, and workspaces to support longer stays. They’re steeped in the serenity of the surrounding woods, and nearby hiking trails and seasonal access roads allow for endless, meandering adventures.

Wetland Sitting

The wetland units will only be accessible via gravel roads, so stays are more seasonal. Given foundation constraints, these will be lighter on the land and better suited for shorter stays, too. They provide more direct access to the beach, but guests can also walk to the nearby trails to get swept up in long hikes and outdoor amenities scattered across the resort.

Interiors & Finishes

The framing of raw land conditions as the core of the guest experience is inspired by the wilderness of Finland, and the interiors of the Shot Point units will echo that inspiration. Rich, natural materials that blend a rustic feel with a touch of elegance create the perfect space to relax and connect deeply to the landscape outside.
We’ll introduce hard-wearing flooring, furniture, and decor that can stand up to heavy use, long stays, and year-round bookings.

Amenities & Guest Experience

Our initial design phase focused on the circulation of guests during their stays. We laid out clusters of units with nearby walking paths, hiking trails, and boardwalks that will make the 240 acres of land accessible while also creating guest spaces that feel private and secluded.
The future phases of design will introduce specific outdoor amenities, like saunas, outdoor hot tubs, fire pits, and other gathering areas that give guests the opportunity to be fully immersed in nature.

Secluded But Accessible

Some of the units will only be accessible by walking paths or boardwalks. This instantly creates a unique guest experience where checking in and getting to your unit is exciting, and it allows for units to feel private despite being close enough to others to share utilities.

Steeped in Nature by Design

Our design choice to avoid overbuilding is an environmental one, but it also allows the guest experience to center around the beauty of the land. The units themselves will be the perfect place to unwind after a day of adventuring, but that immersion in nature is the real draw for Shot Point’s target audience. Outdoor spaces and amenities will help keep the focus where it belongs.
