Vagabonds Home Base

Overview

We built Vagabonds Home Base for a work-from-anywhere couple that spends a good portion of the year outside the U.S. It serves as a primary home for them when they’re in the country, and we designed everything so that it could bring in rental income when they’re traveling.
The exterior design of the home echoes the surrounding meadow-like landscape, with deep green siding and natural wood finishes. It’s a modern and more natural take on a traditional eyebrow colonial home style that was popular in the 17th and 18th centuries.

While the exterior calls back to centuries-old farmhouse design, the interiors are modeled after more-recent 1970s decor. The space is full of mustard yellows, burnt siennas, and hunter greens that give it a unique flair, coupled with earthen materials to pay homage to the stunning views outside.

02Sunken Living Room
Features (38).jpg

True to retro interior design, we built a bump-out to house a sunken living room, a home feature that dominated in the ‘50s, ‘60s, and ‘70s. This creates a cozy shared area that’s perfect for reconnecting after travel.

03Dormer Window In The Loft

We added a dormer window on the second floor, not only to give the property that classic eyebrow Colonial look but also to fill the loft area with natural light. The added head height on the slope also makes the loft feel bigger and more usable.

Interiors

We used a fun, bold color palette and picked some funky materials for the interiors, all to call back to the 1970s theme the owners wanted. To keep the choices from feeling disjointed, we introduced 4x4 tiling in multiple areas to create a cohesive feel and stay true to the retro look.

The plywood panels in the living room are a modern take on old-school wood paneling, and they help create a standalone rec room that feels both private and connected to the rest of the home.
