How Our Residential Strategy Lets Us Go Commercial

HUTS is a housing solutions company, so what are we doing building a restaurant?

We’re currently working on the first commercial project on Main Street in Roxbury, NY, in 100 years: a restaurant that will serve the locals and also capture travelers during the more tourist-heavy seasons.

We build houses, but it turns out that a lot of those same solutions we developed for residential apply to commercial construction, too.

  • We use Standards for homes to keep projects predictable in terms of timelines and cost, and we adapted our Standards to suit this project. Commercial construction costs are so often a mystery, but our approach fixed that.
  • We size homes appropriately for clients rather than building the biggest form the land can support. We did the same thing here, keeping in mind that occupancy will fluctuate throughout the year.
  • We build across the country, so we’ve developed strategies that help us navigate local regulations and restrictions. We used those same strategies here to meet setback requirements, appease historic preservation groups, and make sure the project was something the locals would embrace.

A housing solutions company may not be the first thing you think of for that next rural commercial project, but maybe it should be if the scale is house-like.
