Rural Is the New Frontier

I think the future is in the countryside. That was my answer when someone asked me: “What’s your deal with rural? Why is HUTS so focused on building in small towns and remote areas?”

I meet a lot of younger folks who ask if they should move to Manhattan or San Francisco, and my answer is often neither. One of the 16,000 small towns across the country with a population under 2,500 might be a better fit.

Remote and hybrid work opportunities are increasingly available, which means more flexibility. Fully autonomous cars are on the horizon, which will make accessing remote areas trivial. Land is widely available. Construction costs are a fraction of what they are in major metros. And small towns very often have a high street that’s ripe for re-imagination and innovation.

I see the future being built in rural areas, and that’s a big part of why HUTS is so focused on that frontier.
